June 27

Doug Gardner - Lander to Jeffrey City .....59 miles. A great night in a great town. Breakfast today at the Oxbow Lounge. Immediate climb in the ride that seemed to go on forever. At the top we seemed to pick up a tailwind and made good time through a rolling hills terrain. Jeffrey City is a small town that seems to have dwindled. It was a Uranium mining town and may have befallen other losses in its economy but little is there now. We also saw oil mines today in its vicinity. We found the Split Rock Cafe and the Jeffrey City motel. Both provided only the necessary basics of food and shelter. Howard, Dave and I went for a swim in the Sweetwater River but bailed out as the mosquitoes found us quickly. The big snake watching us from the roadbed also told us it was time to get out. We went back to room, showered, talked and laughed and then turned in early
